Players of the Week
East
Melo Trimble (O’Connell, Arlington, Va.)
The 6-foot-2 senior guard, who has signed with Maryland, capped a huge week with 30 points when O’Connell topped DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) and handed the Stags their first loss of the season.
Trimble had 12 of his 30 points against DeMatha in the fourth quarter, including a game-clinching bucket with 30 seconds left. He also had 11 rebounds.
Earlier in the week, Trimble didn’t score 30 but he did hit for 16 when the Knights beat FAB 50 national No. 5 Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.) 63-58 in overtime.
Last season as a junior, the No. 32 player in the Hoop Scoop Top 100, averaged 20.8 ppg as O’Connell finished 30-7 and won the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title.
Southeast
Wes Person Jr. (Brantley, Ala.)
Wes Jr. has yet to get a big-time D1 college offer but he’s doing his best to have a stellar senior season.
The son of former NBA player Wes Person and nephew of former NBA player Chuck Person had 40 points with seven rebounds and five steals in a 72-44 win last week over Red Level (Ala.). He also hit on 7-of-12 from three-point land.
Later in the week, Person had 27 points with seven rebounds and two steals in a much closer 48-46 triumph over Georgiana.
For the season, Person, who was the 2013 Class 1A Player of the Year in Alabama, is averaging 32.6 points per game.
Midwest
Reed Timmer (Eisenhower, New Berlin, Wis.)
A 6-foot-2 guard who is headed to Drake University, Timmer has people talking in the greater Milwaukee area.
In a 78-57 victory last week over Whitnall, Timmer set a new school record by pouring in 47 points. With the win, Eisenhower also improved its record to 11-1.
Timmer also had 34 points last week when Eisenhower defeated New Berlin West 75-39. He began this week averaging 32.2 points per game.
Last year as a junior, Timmer filled the stat sheets with 24.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.2 steals per game.
Southwest
Jeremy Combs (Carter, Dallas, Texas)
Combs was sweeping the glass like a madman for the Cowboys in their 69-60 victory last week over Seagoville. He finished with 31 rebounds and also led everyone in scoring with 33 points for a rare 30-30 double-double.
For the season, the 6-foot-7 senior who is headed to the University of North Texas has drastically improved his rebounding from 7.7 from last season to 12.9. He also is scoring at 19.6 per game, which actually is down from the 23.2 per game mark he had as a junior.
Last season, Combs pumped in 50 points in one game when the Cowboys beat North Dallas.
West
Eli Chuha (Redlands East Valley, Redlands, Calif.)
Just one year ago, Eli was a complete unknown for the Wildcats since he was just going out to play basketball for the first time. Now, he is a 6-foot-7 senior who is among the California state scoring leaders.
Despite the late start, Chuha eventually landed a spot on the All-CIF Southern Section Division 2A squad. He also gained attention from a few colleges, including Cal State Northridge, where he is reportedly heading.
In his games last week, Chuha scored 33 points and had 11 rebounds in a 62-51 win over Great Oak of Temecula; and then had 28 points with 10 rebounds as REV topped Beaumont 82-70. He is averaging 26.5 points and 12.1 rebounds per game.
