All-American Honors

Editor’s Note: The annual All-American Elite Team has been published at the conclusion of each season for 30 consecutive years, beginning with the 1994-95 season. National high school hall of fame writer Doug Huff, who is credited with creating the national high school record book and donating the info to the NFHS and provided high school statistical articles from 1975-85 to Street & Smith’s, compiled All-American selections with Student Sports Editor Mark Tennis between 1995 and 2004. Hoop Scoop editor Ronnie Flores began spearheading the selections from the 2004-05 season on.

The All-American Elite Team’s national player of the year, known as Mr. Basketball USA, is chosen by a distinguished 10-man panel. The All-American Elite Team is selected with the unique approach of choosing players strictly based on high school accomplishment, not on college and/or pro potential, and are reflective of those that lead their teams to state championships. Unlike some of the vast amount of recruiting-based All-American teams that have been published over the years, the All-American Elite Team does not knowingly include fifth-year players, and those ineligible due to age or academics.

Flores also selects a Underclass All-American Team, breaking up selections among juniors, sophomores and freshmen. The All-American Elite Team and Mr. Basketball USA are currently released by Ballislife.com. For many years, HOOP SCOOP Editor Emeritus Clark Francis also published the Hoop Scoop All-American Team, an annual look at the top 100 players nationally, regardless of class or position. These honor squads should not be confused with the Hoop Scoop Top 100 National Player Rankings, which can be found for each class back to 1983-84 by CLICKING HERE.
