An eligibility ordeal in Chicago that has drawn national attention did not shake up the Student Sports FAB 50 — at least not this week. Top-ranked Curie of Chicago had all of its regular season wins forfeited, but on Monday the IHSA ruled the Condors can compete in the Illinois Class 4A state tournament. Curie will have a tough road to a state title while the mythical national title hopes of another public school in the Pacific Northwest became much stronger due to another key off-the-court development.

Rainier Beach’s Big Opportunity
On Wednesday the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) waived regulations that restricted member school Rainier Beach (Seattle) from potentially participating in the Dick’s Sporting Goods National High School Tournament in April. This decision could have long-term ramifications towards the goal of crowning a true national high school basketball championship on the court.

New FAB 50 National Rankings
Two of the nation’s top four teams need overtime to gut out playoff victories, including top-ranked Curie of Chicago, which had to go to four overtimes to pull out a dramatic victory over No. 8 Whitney Young for the Chicago Public League crown. No. 4 Mater Dei of Santa Ana (Calif.), meanwhile, needs an extra four minutes to win its CIF Southern Section Open Division playoff opener. Neither team drops in the FAB 50, but Curie’s victory is clouded by eligibility issues that could potentially derail a championship season.

New FAB 50 National Rankings
Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.) falls from the top 10 after a Washington Catholic Athletic Conference loss to newcomer O’Connell (Arlington, Va.). The Panthers remain in the top 25 because of their overall strength of schedule and a victory later in the week over DeMatha Catholic. The upcoming WCAC playoffs and other section post-season games are sure to cause changes in the next two weeks after this week brings only four newcomers to the FAB 50.

New FAB 50 National Rankings
After a close call in conference play, Curie of Chicago remains the No. 1 team in the Student Sports FAB 50, which also doesn’t see any movement in its top 10. It won’t be easy for the Condors the rest of the way, however, as a potential showdown looms down the line with No. 6 Whitney Young of Chicago. The Dolphins play this week in the game of the week at the Nike Extravaganza in Southern California where they will square off against No. 4 Mater Dei of Santa Ana. The Monarchs’ two games at the Nike Extravaganza will provide two great comparative scores against No. 2 Montverde Academy of Florida and No. 3 Rainier Beach of Seattle.

Updated FAB 50 National Rankings
Defending FAB 50 champion Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) remains in the top spot after staying unbeaten against tough opponents at the Culligan City of Palms Classic, the Wild Wing Café High School Hoops Classic and Cancer Research Classic. The Eagles have some tough upcoming games as well. With a mixed bag of results so far, we reward teams that have played a national schedule. Unbeaten teams that haven’t played as many games or stayed local over the holidays will move up slower.
